Johannes Badrutt
A house of tradition that has made history
The luxurious Kulm Hotel St. Moritz has enjoyed an excellent reputation in the Swiss hotel trade for 150 years. Thanks to its founder, hotel pioneer Johannes Badrutt, St. Moritz and the Kulm Hotel were already considered tops in the Swiss Alps in the 19th century. A bet made the Engadine the cradle of winter tourism at that time.
As the son of a god-fearing craftsman and later master builder, Johannes Badrutt learned the meaning of hard work early on. When he acquired the Pension Faller – today’s Kulm Hotel – in 1856, he knew that he would need determination to enjoy continuing success as a hotel manager. Not only his wife Maria but also the magnificent Engadine helped him inspire enthusiasm for the hotel in his guests. And Badrutt had success: It all began with a bet.
