The St. Moritz Olympic Stadium - A chapter in Olympic history next to the Kulm Hotel

Almost a century ago, the Olympic Stadium was built on the grounds of the Kulm Hotel in St. Moritz – a building that quickly became a landmark of the second Winter Olympics and still represents a rare fusion of sporting and architectural history today.

The history

During the 1928 Winter Games, the stadium hosted the opening and closing ceremonies, drawing spectators to its stands to watch the action. With the second Winter Olympics in 1948, just a few years after the Second World War, the stadium entered a new era. The games in St. Moritz at that time were characterised by new beginnings and international exchange – they brought St. Moritz worldwide recognition and gave the resort a fresh lustre.

A deep connection

The Kulm Hotel’s connection with the Olympic Games remains strong to this day. In addition to the stadium, the legendary tracks of the St. Moritz–Celerina Olympic Bob Run and the Cresta Run are located on the hotel grounds. Both Olympic venues attract guests from all over the world every year and embody St. Moritz’s long-standing sporting tradition.

A revival

After years of vacancy, artist and St. Moritz enthusiast Rolf Sachs was given the opportunity to breathe new life into the historic stadium building. With a flair for contemporary aesthetics and respect for the original structure, he renovated the exterior and designed the interior with modern touches that preserve and reinterpret the original atmosphere. His artistic signature transforms the stadium, where he resides in winter, into an inspiring place and a tribute to Olympic history.

Located next to the Kulm Golf Driving Range, the stadium is easily accessible for hotel guests in both summer and winter. The building’s clean and functional architecture is still remarkable today. The stadium blends harmoniously into the landscape, yet remains a striking eye-catcher – a monument that combines sporting past and architectural present.
